📚Be, Black Girl Be (Taylor Darks| Sharee Miller) is a lyrical and affirming poem that gives little Black girls permission to NOT do the most. No hustle culture, Black girl martyrdom or putting everyone's needs before your own allowed. Only self-care, joy, mindfulness and healthy supporting relationships in these pages.

Are you a mood reader? 🙋🏾‍♀️I mean, if this read isn't timely, I dont know what it is.

A few thoughts:

📆I think it's interesting to note that #angelajacksonbrown figured out that her book HOMEWARD would release 60 years after the events in the book. It's only been 60 years ya'll.

💧 My father-in-love, who we laid to rest a few days ago, marched with Dr. KING and had the water hoses turned on him. It wasn't that long ago. Now, once again, we live in a country that feels as turbulent and unsafe and chaotic as the 1960s.

♥️ This is my first historical fiction novel set in the 1960s

📚I am always so impressed with authors that write historical fiction because I can't even imagine the amount of work, research, time and effort that went into making sure that their characters and their stories are accurate.

➡️my husband is currently writing the music for a hip hop musical about the life of John Lewis. When we went to see a workshop of it a few weeks ago, I had to explain the 4 little girls to my 2 little girls. IFKYK . Bae's song about the 💣 was on repeat in my head while reading this section.

📺This year, we have watched more civil rights documentaries and YouTube interviews, and read articles and books together. Along with helping my 5th grader study for her civil rights social studies unit.

**The synopsis **

Georgia, 1962. Rose Perkins Bourdon returns home to Parsons, GA, without her husband and pregnant with another man’s baby. After tragedy strikes her husband in the war overseas, a numb Rose is left with pieces of who she used to be and is forced to figure out what she is going to do with the rest of her life. Her sister introduces her to members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee—young people are taking risks and fighting battles Rose has only seen on television.

Homeward follows Rose’s path toward self-discovery and growth as she becomes involved in the Civil Rights Movement, finally becoming the woman she has always dreamed of being.

Young John Lewis, the hip-hop musical, had a works

Young John Lewis, the hip-hop musical, had a workshop reading for the public this past Tuesday. What is Young John Lewis? Its the musical my husband's been composing for since 2023. All of the song snippets that have been wafting upstairs through the floor boards from my husband's basement studio for the past year finally make sense.

The world premiere won't hit the stage until June 2025 but I cant wait for audiences to experience the civil rights movement through hip-hop. It was funny, fun and fresh and reinforced my 5th graders' social studies lessons. (But not necessarily for this age group @$&#!)

Of course, as I'm watching, "Diane Nash" facilite a rap battle between John Lewis and Stoakley Carmichael I'm thinking of all of the books that remind me of the characters and events of the movement. Here are the pics:
